Why We Built Petal

April 3, 2026 • By Dakota & Katie Cole

We built Petal because Katie needed it, and nothing like it existed.

Like millions of people, Katie had been using health tracking apps for years — period trackers, symptom logs, pregnancy apps, all of them promising to "understand your body" and "empower your health journey." But the reality was frustrating:

  • Apps that did one thing well, but nothing else. Want cycle tracking? Great, but when you get pregnant, you're downloading a whole new app and losing all your history.
  • Privacy nightmares. Free apps loaded with ads, selling your health data to advertisers, or requiring accounts with giant tech companies.
  • Cluttered interfaces. Too many features no one asked for, buried under paywalls and push notifications.
  • No partner involvement. Health tracking felt isolating — like something you managed alone, even when your partner wanted to help.

Katie wanted something simple: one app that tracked cycles, symptoms, and wellness habits — and seamlessly transitioned into pregnancy mode when the time came. She wanted her data private, the interface clean, and the option to share updates with her partner without needing a separate app or worrying about data brokers.

We couldn't find that app. So we built it.

What Makes Petal Different

We're a husband-and-wife team. Dakota's a software developer and Katie's been frustrated by every health app she's tried. Together, we set out to build something we'd actually want to use — and something we'd trust with our family's most personal data.

Here's what that meant:

Privacy first. Your health data is yours. We don't sell it. We don't show ads. We don't hand it over to data brokers or "partners." Petal runs on encrypted servers, and you can export or delete your data anytime.

One app, two modes. Cycle tracking when you need it, pregnancy mode when you're ready. Contraction timer, kick counter, birth plan, hospital bag checklist — all built in. No switching apps and losing your history.

Built for couples. Partner mode lets you share health updates, appointment reminders, and pregnancy milestones with the person who cares most. They don't need their own account — just a simple, secure link.

No fluff. Petal does what you need and nothing more. Track your cycle, log symptoms, see predictions, monitor your pregnancy, and go live your life.

Building It From Scratch

We started from zero — no venture capital, no board meetings, no growth targets. Just two people who believed there had to be a better way.

Dakota handled the backend, designing a secure infrastructure that keeps your data private without selling you out for ad revenue. Katie tested every feature, questioning every design choice, making sure Petal felt right — not like another bloated health app, but like a tool you'd actually reach for.

We launched Petal in early 2026 as a small, indie app. We're not trying to be the next billion-dollar startup. We're trying to build something useful, honest, and worth the trust you place in it.

What's Next

We're just getting started. Petal already handles cycle tracking, symptom predictions, pregnancy mode, and partner sharing — but there's so much more we want to build:

  • Smarter insights based on your unique patterns
  • Export-friendly reports for doctor visits
  • More customization options for power users
  • Features we haven't even thought of yet (we're listening!)

If you've been looking for a health tracker that respects your privacy, works the way you think, and grows with you — we built it for you.
